From Printer Manufacturer to Digital Services Pioneer
From its founding in 1936 to today, Ricoh has built a strong reputation as a pioneer in office automation and document management. But the company's story doesn't stop there. In recent years, Ricoh has undergone a strategic transformation to become a leader in digital services, showcasing its ability to adapt to the fast-changing world.
A New Business Structure for a Digital Future
In November 2020, Ricoh announced a major restructuring plan to accelerate its transition to digital services. Originally set for completion in 2023, the company fast-tracked its efforts and implemented the new structure in April 2021.
This restructuring divided Ricoh’s operations into five independent business units, aimed at increasing agility, streamlining decision-making, and fostering innovation. The five units are:
- Ricoh Digital Services: Connecting offices and workspaces with digital solutions.
- Ricoh Digital Products: Developing devices that integrate seamlessly with Ricoh’s digital solutions.
- Ricoh Graphic Communications: Providing advanced digital printing solutions for printing businesses.
- Ricoh Industrial Solutions: Enhancing manufacturing and logistics processes with cutting-edge technology.
- Ricoh Futures: Innovating solutions to address social challenges.
Digital Technology: The Core of Transformation
Ricoh has embraced advanced digital technologies like AI, IoT, and cloud computing to deliver modern solutions tailored to the needs of businesses. Key initiatives include:
- RICOH Smart Integration Platform: A cloud-based solution simplifying workflows and enabling the shift from analog to digital processes.
- RICOH Intelligent Business Platform: Leveraging AI and low-code applications to enhance operational efficiency.
Ricoh has also implemented AI in its manufacturing processes, reducing defective toner products by up to 91% and boosting overall production by 5%, demonstrating its commitment to continuous improvement.
Sustainability and Innovation: Core Values That Endure
Ricoh’s transformation is guided by its founding philosophy: “Love your neighbor, love your country, and love your work.” This philosophy has driven the company’s commitment to sustainability and social responsibility.
As one of the first Japanese companies to join the RE100 initiative, Ricoh has pledged to use 100% renewable energy by 2050. Its recognition as a “Digital Transformation (DX) Stock 2022” further underscores Ricoh’s success in integrating sustainability with technological innovation.
Vision for 2036: Fulfillment Through Work
Looking ahead to its 100th anniversary in 2036, Ricoh envisions a future where workplaces are transformed through digital connections that inspire creativity and enhance job satisfaction.
The company’s priorities for research and development align with this vision, focusing on three core areas:
- Devices: Hardware that bridges analog and digital workflows.
- Software: Tools that simplify and optimize workflows.
- Platforms: Seamless systems integrating hardware and software.
Trust and Collaboration: Foundations for the Future
Under the leadership of CEO Akira Oyama, Ricoh remains committed to building trust among its employees, customers, partners, and communities. By fostering global collaboration and leveraging regional expertise, the company aims to deliver comprehensive solutions that address diverse challenges.
Ricoh’s transformation is not just a business strategy, it’s a testament to the ability to anticipate and adapt to change. By harnessing digital technology, embracing sustainability, and prioritizing trust, Ricoh has positioned itself as a leader ready for the future.
